Fire ripped through part of a downtown building of condominiums this afternoon, forcing the evacuation of the structure and covering much of downtown in thick black smoke.

The blaze broke out shortly after 3 p.m. apparently in the elevator shaft of the Park Place Condominiums at 1200 I Street. The top floor of the four-story structure was shooting flames into the sky within an hour of the first reports of the fire.

Firefighters and police said this afternoon they knew of no injuries.

Streets in the area of the blaze were blocked off as firefighters went from floor to floor making sure the building was evacuated. Residents who got out and others stood on nearby lawns and sidewalks watching. Many took pictures; others talked on cell phones.

“I think it looks like a bad one,” said Glenn Pruitt. “And I certainly hope that everyones out, right down to the pet gerbils.”

My boss (who is less than 8 months from retirement) had one of the condos on the fourth floor. He was on vacation when this happened. Complete tragedy.
